Watermarking is a technique used to embed an invisible or visible mark onto a pieice of digital media such as an image, video, or document. This is done to claim ownership over the media and deter unauthorised reproduction or distribution. There are two main types of watermarks: visible & invisible:
Visible Watermarks:
Visible watermarks are typically text or logos that are overlaid onto the content. This makes them visible to anyone who views the media. As visible watermarks are so noticeable and difficult to remove without degrading the quality of the media, they can be a good deterrent for unauthorised use.
Invisible Watermarks:
Invisible watermarks are not visible to the naked eye but rather are embedded into the content. These are implemented using various techniques such as altering pixel values, modifying frequency components, or adding imperceptible patterns to the media. Invisible watermarks are usually used in scenarios where a visible mark might detract from the viewer´s experience.
Technologies used:
Visible watermarks can be added using image editing software’s such as Adobe Photoshop or specialised watermarking tools. In addition, invisible watermarks use a variety of techniques from domain transformation, spread spectrum methods, and embedding information in specific components of the media.
Reasons to use watermarks:
Copyright protection: watermarking is used to assert ownership and intellectual property for creators.
Deterrence: they can be used to discourage individuals from stealing or sharing content without permission.
Attribution: watermarks can be used to credit a particular creator
Tracking: watermarks can be used to track the distribution of content across the interent, helping creators to monitor and enforce their rights.
Whilst there are some positives to using watermarks it is important to note that there are some downsides to using them. For example:
Aesthetic Impact: visible watermarks can detract from the overall aesthetics of an image of video and affect the viewer´s experience.
This can lead to dissatisfaction from users, viewers & customers.
Watermarks can have a limited effectiveness as determined individuals with the intent to misuse or steal content may still find ways to remove or obscure visible watermarks.
Overall, watermarks can help creators to protect their content, but it is not a bulletproof solution to preventing stolen content and copyright.
